How Your Emotions Impact Your Thyroid Health

13 years ago, Oprah created controversy when she invited a doctor on her talk show to argue that hypothyroidism may be the result of repressed emotions.  For the many millions of women in America with hypothyroidism, this idea was a true wake up call.

Conventional medicine’s thought on thyroid and emotions has always been a one-way street. If your thyroid is underactive, it will make you depressed, moody, and fat.  If it's overactive, it can make you anxious, cold, and rail-thin.  Believe it or not, your thyroid is much more complicated than just the symptoms you are struggling with.

We now know so much more about the thyroid and how our emotions, especially repressed anger and stress can affect thyroid function.  At the most basic level, anger is a threat response - the fight in fight or flight.  The experience of anger is associated in part with the chemistry of stress hormones, such as cortisol, norepinephrine, and epinephrine.  Cortisol can suppress TSH (thyroid-stimulating hormone).

Over time, chronic cortisol release from ongoing stress can lead to autoimmune thyroid disease.  It’s important to stress that a short-lived burst of cortisol shouldn't impact thyroid function.  It’s the chronic stress response that alters thyroid function.

When it comes to anger, many Eastern energy healing systems consider the thyroid to be the seat of the throat chakra and important for creativity and self-expression.   So, what happens when you are angry, but stop yourself from expressing it?  Basically, you are swallowing your anger.  You are stuffing all those emotions down your throat and into your gut where 70% of your immune system lives.  Your body has many physiological responses to stress and anger that impacts your overall health.

If you are struggling with a thyroid condition, part of healing your thyroid gland is getting to the root cause.
