Lack of Sleep and Chronic Disease

Sleep is an essential function that allows your body and mind to recharge, leaving you refreshed and alert when you wake up. Healthy sleep also helps the body remain healthy and ward off diseases. Without enough sleep, the brain cannot function properly. This can impair your abilities to concentrate, think clearly, and process memories.

Ongoing sleep deficiency has also been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke.

For most adults, at least seven hours of sleep each night is needed for proper cognitive and behavioral functions. An insufficient amount of sleep can lead to serious repercussions.

Not sleeping well can also lead to irregular eating habits, such as preferring high-calorie, high-fat foods, the experts say. Sleep deprivation can also reduce your insulin sensitivity, which affects how well your body can use insulin to reduce elevated blood sugar levels.

Sleep disturbance is often observed amongst diabetics. It is possibly caused by impaired glucose metabolism or physical and psychological discomfort due to the disorder. In addition, a recent prospective study of women has indicated an interesting association between sleep patterns and later-onset type 2 diabetes.

Low blood glucose levels, hypoglycemia, can also have a negative impact upon your sleep.

Here are a few tips to improve your sleep:

  • Avoid watching TV while in bed

  • Disconnect from all devices

  • Set the AC to a cool temperature

  • Install black out shades

  • Update your mattress, pillows and bedding

  • Keep pets off your bed

  • Keep noise to a minimum

  • Use essential oils, teas and herbs

  • Set a fixed time to go to bed and to rise allowing for 7-9 hours

  • Avoid naps longer than 20 minutes

  • Monitor caffeine and alcohol intake

The bottom line is that sleep is crucial to optimal health. If sleep is a challenge for you, we can help.
