What is Insulin Resistance?

Insulin resistance is when cells in your liver, muscles and fat don’t respond well to insulin and can’t use glucose from your blood for energy. To help make up for this, your pancreas makes more insulin. Unfortunately, over time, your blood sugar levels increase.

Insulin resistance affects 1 in 3 Americans. It is also known as metabolic syndrome.

How do you know if you’re insulin resistant? Well there’s no real symptom per se but there are warning signs.

IR signs include:

  • Fasting glucose over 100mg/dL

  • Fasting triglycerides over 150mg/dL

  • HDL under 40mg/dL

  • Waistline over 40 inches in men and 35 inches in women

  • Skin tags and discoloration

  • Patches of dark, velvety skin

Risk factors and causes may include:

  • Sedentary lifestyle

  • Smoking

  • Gestational diabetes

  • History of PCOS and fatty liver disease

  • High carb diet

  • Sleep apnea

  • Hormone disorders

  • Belly fat

Your lifestyle plays a major role in developing insulin resistance, diabetes and realistically every single disease.

I recommend taking a close look at your daily routine and make sure you are exercising, consuming a less processed diet, managing your stress levels and getting enough sleep.
